Hotel Elefant, “one of New York’s fastest rising new-music outfits” (Time Out New York) seeks scores for programming consideration for its December 1, 2018, program, Letters that you will not get. The program will feature the world premiere of a song cycle by Kirsten Volness, which sets letters and poetry by American, British, Irish, French, and German women during World War I. Submissions bearing a thematic connection to this work—ie, addressing issues of war, correspondence, women’s voices, narrative, or any other facet of the new work—are especially encouraged.

Applications are open now through November 01. 



Submissions may draw from the following complement:


  • Mezzo-soprano

  • Flute (incl. auxiliary instruments)

  • Clarinet (incl. auxiliary instruments)​​​

  • Percussion (smaller setups preferred; chimes, timpani, large concert bass drum, tuned Thai gongs, etc. unavailable)

  • Violin

  • Viola

  • Cello




  • The call for scores is open to all composers. 


  • There are no restrictions with regards to age, nationality, student/professional status, etc., nor with regards to performance history, publication status, or previous awards of the submitted works.

  • There is no submission fee. (Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to support Hotel Elefant:


  • Each applicant may submit one work for consideration.


  • Submitted works must not exceed 15 minutes in length.

  • Submissions will be adjudicated and selections will be made by the members of Hotel Elefant.
